The Trump administration is pushing an accelerated $7 billion redevelopment of Penn Station, aiming for construction to begin in 2027 despite lacking a developer. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Amtrak executive Andy Byford announced the plan, supported by a $43 million federal grant for preliminary engineering. Amtrak, which assumed control earlier this year, is seeking applications for a master developer by October. While Gov. Kathy Hochul withdrew her earlier $1 billion pledge, federal officials insist on a fair competition. A controversial plan to demolish a block south of the station appears off the table. Federal focus also extends to Washington’s Union Station.
